JPEG

Joint Photographic Experts Group

A graphic image file produced using the JPEG compression technique. The file extension for such images is ‘jpeg’.

Kbps

Kbps or Kilobits per second.

Thousands of bits per second -  a measure of speed of data transfer across a communications link ie. a broadband enabled telephone line.

Learning Object

An instructional, self-contained resource, consisting of one or more content objects, that can be managed, delivered, assessed and monitored electronically, and which has implicit or explicit learning objectives associated with it. A learning object usually has one unique educational purpose.


Learning Plaform

A learning platform is software which is available online and which supports teaching and learning for practitioners and learners.  A learning platform can perform three main functions:

  • content management and delivery of learning materials
  • provision of communications for users, notably email, discussion forums and chat
  • curriculumn management activity, including student login and tracking of their work.

M

m-learning

The use of mobile and handheld IT devices, such as PDAs, mobile phones, laptops and tablet PCs, in teaching and learning.


Managed Learning Environment (MLE)

The term MLE usually refers to the same concept as learning platform.
Initially the term MLE was used by some to describe the combination of a VLE and an MIS system. However, the term has evolved to include other elements, such as portal technologies.

Mbps

Millions of bits per second - a measure of the speed of data transfer across a communications link.

MIS - Management Information System

An MIS system is used by learning providers, it is also known as the administration system. The MIS typically provides tools to manage learner records, registration, attendance, assessment, behaviour, examinations, budgeting and finance

N

National Learning Network

A national partnership programme that supports the development of the network infrastructure and provides technical and strategic support, management systems, staff development, guidance and advice to promote a strategic approach to ILT across the learning and skills.


P

PDA

A hand-held computer that allows you to store, access and organise information.
