ESOL Courses for Non-English Speakers –
Hampshire Learns offers a selection of English courses for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). We offer various levels, from Entry Level to Advanced Level, to help you improve your English language skills, to gain work, or to advance your career, as well as prepare you for further academic or vocational study in the UK
Advanced preparing for IELTS courses are also available.
Our ESOL courses is fully funded for eligible learners aged 19+ via Hampshire County Council’s Adult Education and Skills Budget. Please note that ESOL courses are available individuals who have lived in the UK for at least three years, or have been granted leave to remain in the UK. However, acceptance on an ESOL course does not constitute an immigration sponsorship and no Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) certificate will be issued.-

This course is for eligible adults living in Hampshire aged 19+ who would like to gain skills using English in everyday situations. It will help you to gain confidence and knowledge of English reading, writing, and speaking to help you at home and at work.
This course is suitable for people whose English is at Entry 1 / Beginner Level e.g. people who can speak, read or write only a few words in English or maybe none at all. This course will help you to:
- Ask and answer questions
- Use clear pronunciation
- Understand an explanation
- Learn more about grammar
- Understand instructions
- Take part in a discussion
This course will be delivered face to face in a community venue. We offer flexible start and finish dates between September to July each academic year. Minimum length of study is 6 weeks.

This course is for eligible adults living in Hampshire aged 19+ who would like to gain skills using English in everyday situations. It will help you talk, read and write about more interesting subjects and make fewer mistakes so people can understand you, you can understand them, and you can read and write important messages, emails, forms and news stories. It is for people whose English is at Entry 2 / Entry 3 Level (Pre-Intermediate Level). This course will help you to achieve the following:
- Ask and answer questions
- Use clear pronunciation
- Understand an explanation
- Learn more about grammar
- Understand instructions
- Take part in discussions
This course will be delivered face to face in a community venue. We offer flexible start and finish dates between September to July each academic year. Minimum length of study is 6 weeks.

This course is for eligible adults living in Hampshire aged 19+ who would like to gain skills using English in everyday situations. This course will help you practise your speaking, listening, reading, and writing so you can understand people better, talk about most daily topics, read a simple news story, and write a long email or letter. It is for people whose English is at Entry 3/ Pre-Intermediate level. This course will help you to achieve the following:
· listen and respond to spoken language, including straightforward information and narratives, and follow straightforward explanations and instructions
· read and understand short, straightforward texts on familiar topics accurately and independently
· write to communicate information and opinions with some adaption to the intended audience

This course is for eligible adults living in Hampshire aged 19+ who would like to gain skills using English in everyday situations. This course will help you speak, read, and write about more complicated topics with greater accuracy. You will learn how to make a presentation, write formally and informally, and read about more challenging and interesting subjects. It is for people whose English is at Level 1 / Intermediate level. This course will help you to achieve the following:
· listen and respond to spoken language, including information and narratives, and follow explanations and instructions of varying length
· read and understand straightforward texts of varying lengths on a variety of topics accurately and independently
· write to communicate information, ideas and opinions clearly using length, format and style appropriate to purpose and audience
This course will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams. We offer flexible start and finish dates between September to July each academic year. Minimum length of study is 6 weeks.

This course is for eligible adults living in Hampshire aged 19+ who would like to gain skills using English in everyday situations. This course will enrich your vocabulary and expression in both formal and informal English, enhance your grammar, and prepare you for the demands of work and study in the UK. It is for people whose English is at Level 2 / Upper-Intermediate level. This course will help you to achieve the following:
· speak to communicate straightforward and detailed information, ideas and opinions clearly, adapting speech and content to take account of the listener(s), medium, purpose and situation
· read and understand a range of texts of varying complexity accurately and independently
· write to communicate information, ideas and opinions clearly and effectively, using length, format and style appropriate to purpose, content and audience.

This course is for eligible adults living in Hampshire aged 19+ who would like to gain advanced skills using English. This 10-week course provides extensive practice for the Speaking, Writing, Listening and Reading sections of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) General exam. It is for people whose English is at Level 2+ / Advanced level. This course will help you to achieve the following:
· Apply different techniques / strategies to respond to exam tasks in speaking/writing/listening/reading in the IELTS examination
· Extend your written and spoken responses by using a range of cohesive devices, and by improving manipulation of grammatical structures and vocabulary
· Structure and organise your written work
· Devise an individual action plan and continue with self-study to achieve your target IELTS banding.
This course will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams. Minimum length of study is 10 weeks.

This course is aimed at adults living in Hampshire aged 19+ who would like to develop their knowledge and skills about working in the UK. This course would help if you would like support and guidance about where to look for work, and to identify the skills, attitudes and values employers in the UK will be looking for. You will develop your English skills, identify barriers to work and begin to create a personal action plan. Your tutor will also help you to identify your next steps towards employment or further learning. The course will cover:
- list your education, achievements and skills for your personal statement
- identify any barriers to employment and list how you can overcome these barriers
- identify where to look for work and find relevant vacancies
- list the requirements of specific job role and how to apply
- find out what to expect, and what to prepare for an interview in the UK

This course is aimed at adults living in Hampshire aged 19+ who would like to develop their knowledge and skills further about working in the UK. This course will help if you would like support and guidance from a tutor to look for work in the UK. You will develop your English skills further to be able to answer interview questions confidently using the STAR method. Your tutor will also help you to identify your next steps towards employment or further learning. The course will cover:
- Develop a professional CV and cover letter
- Find out about ways you can learn new skills for employment through volunteering, apprenticeships, SWAPS or skills bootcamps
- Practice answering situational interview questions confidently using the STAR method
- Create a progression plan using SMART targets for your next steps
This course is suitable where English is your second or other language (ESOL) at intermediate level and above. This course is for adults living in Hampshire aged 19+ who meet the eligibility and residency criteria. This course is a progression opportunity for intermediate to advanced ESOL learners to develop your English skills to apply for the UK Driving Theory Test. The course will develop your confidence to be able to access and complete the online theory test. This course will help you to achieve the following:
- Begin to recognise warning and advisory road signs and be able to discuss the different shapes, colours, and types of UK road signs.
- Identify road markings and begin to talk about the rules and regulations for each using the correct English terminology and tenses.
- Attempt to discuss hazard perception questions using both written and spoken English to develop your confidence to use driving terminology in the correct format and context.
- Build your confidence reading and writing the terminology that is used in the UK driving theory test by answering practice questions in a supportive group.
- Complete self-directed written tasks, quizzes and activities between sessions that aim to develop your spoken and written English.
This course is suitable where English is your second or other language (ESOL) at Entry 3/ Pre-Intermediate level to Advanced level. You will need to aim for 100% attendance to get the maximum benefit from this course. Please note that there will be no examinations or tests and your UK Driving Theory Test will not be provided in this course.

This course is for adults living in Hampshire aged 19+ who meet the eligibility and residency criteria. This course is a progression opportunity for intermediate to advanced ESOL learners to develop your English skills further to apply for the UK Driving Theory Test. This six week course will develop your confidence to be able to access and complete the online theory test. This course will help you to achieve the following:
- Recognise 12 warning and advisory road signs with ease and be able to explain the different shapes, colours and types of road signs.
- Select at least 4 road markings correctly and be able to talk about the rules and regulations for each.
- Be able to answer at least 4 hazard perception questions correctly using both written and spoken English with the correct spelling, grammar and tense.
- Complete a practice driving theory test to develop confidence in reading and writing English for driving theory.
This course is suitable where English is your second or other language (ESOL) at Entry 3 Level (Pre-Intermediate) to Advanced level. 100% attendance is expected to get the maximum benefit from this course. Please note that there will be no examinations or tests and your UK Driving Theory Test will not be provided in this course.
